A posthumously published collection of ten stories by Frank Norris (1870–1902), one of the major American naturalist writers of the turn of the twentieth century and author of McTeague and The Octopus. The title story, “A Deal in Wheat,” is particularly notable for its treatment of commodity speculation and the contrasting effects of movements in the wheat market on farmers, speculators, and consumers. Set partly amid the wheat-growing regions of Kansas and the grain markets of Chicago, it reflects Norris's continuing interest in the economic forces linking agriculture, finance, and ordinary lives.
