About this book In October 1886 the Austrian artist Rudolph Swoboda arrived in Bombay to paint a series of portraits illustrating the "various types of the different nationalities of India. Commissioned by Queen Victoria, he travelled through a great part of what was then British India and the Princely States, painting the people he found. The works he produced, which show a remarkably broad range of ages, religions and occupations, are normally housed as Osborne House on the Isle of Wright. Dr. Saloni Mathur, Assistant Professor of Art History at the University of California, Los Angeles, addresses these little-known paintings as both documents of an Imperial state, and as striking, eloquent works of art.
