Selznick to the celebrated special-effects artist Jack Cosgrove, dated 7 September 1939, the front cover stamped with Selznick's name.Rebecca was Selznick's first production after the phenomenal success of Gone with the Wind (1939), and he approached it with characteristic attention to the screenplay's fidelity to its source. Having paid a record sum for the rights to Daphne du Maurier's 1938 novel, Selznick clashed repeatedly with Alfred Hitchcock over the adaptation, rejecting the director's earlier, more freely reimagined treatment in favour of a script that hewed closely to du Maurier's text. The film, released in 1940, won the Academy Award for Best Picture - the only Hitchcock film to do so.Selznick gave this copy to Cosgrove, who was Academy Award-nominated for his work on both Rebecca and Gone with the Wind. As described in an accompanying letter of provenance, it was passed by Cosgrove's wife, Babe, to one of her close friends, the mother of the last owner. Selznick also gave Cosgrove a script for Gone with the Wind.
