Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World by Lemuel Gulliver. First Brock edition, in a fine prize binding. This is an early title illustrated by Charles Edmund who, with his brother Henry Matthews, was soon one of the leading period illustrators.Brock (1870-1938) was particularly attracted to the design and fashion of the Regency and early Victorian eras and gathered period artefacts on which he modelled his art. Houfe notes Hugh Thomson as a clear influence. This title was issued as part of Macmillan's Cranford series of gift books, which was inspired by the success of Thomson's version of Gaskill's novel. Although Brock was also a painter, here he employs the pen drawings characteristic of the series. However, Houfe notes that the Brocks were more historically accurate in their work than Thomson.
