Colton's General Atlas,

£4,500 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books

A wonderfully detailed atlas which includes early plans of New York as well as London and Paris, and numerous other American cities including Philadelphia and Chicago. Three years after the first edition came out Colton issued this single volume edition which expanded the maps of Texas and Kansas with Nebraska to double pages. The same year Colton was forced into bankruptcy and the plates for this Atlas were bought by Johnson and Browning, who quickly produced several reprints. This, however, is the Colton production and of higher quality. Folio (46 x 38 cm); complete with frontispiece and 97 maps with numerous insets, vignettes, and plans, vast majority coloured, and 5 of which double page, armorial bookplate to pastedown; publisher's gilt pictorial cloth with elaboratedly embossed frames to boards, flat spine lettered in gilt with six gilt compartments, all edges gilt, a very good copy. Phillips, 827.
