This is a signed copy of the 1972 first edition, inscribed by John Kaufmann to "Margarita" with the message "I hope you enjoy this primer about these subject many are in the dark" and signed "John" with the year 1972. Kaufmann wrote and illustrated this himself, and the charcoal-style bat drawings throughout are genuinely striking, with some full-spread illustrations on deep purple pages that give this book a gothic atmosphere unusual for a children's science title. Part of the beloved Let's Read and Find Out Science series, edited by Dr. Roma Gans of Columbia University and Dr. Franklyn M. Branley of the Hayden Planetarium. This series has a devoted collector following, and bat-themed books with Halloween-ready cover art in purple and orange are especially sought after by both vintage children's book collectors and gothic/witchy aesthetic buyers, a market that has grown substantially in recent years.
