Percival’s Democracy Is Self-Government, First Edition, 1952, personally inscribed and signed by Percival on May 2, 1952, approximately ten months before his death in March 1953. The inscription is addressed to Henry B. Van Sinderen and specifically thanks him for permitting the reproduction of his 1951 Christmas card as the endpapers of the book. Remarkably, the book itself independently confirms this association: the printed endpapers state that they were reproduced from the 1951 Christmas card of Henry B. Van Sinderen, Washington, Connecticut. This therefore goes considerably beyond an ordinary signed first edition. It is a documented presentation and association copy linking the author directly to a contributor whose work became part of the physical design of the first edition. Percival was an unusually private American metaphysical and esoteric philosopher, best known for Thinking and Destiny. His writings explored consciousness, immortality, self-government, symbolism and initiatic philosophy. In the same year this book appeared, 1952, he also published Masonry and Its Symbols. The intellectual atmosphere is apparent almost immediately: the opening material references Albert Pike’s Morals and Dogma, the monumental nineteenth-century work associated with Scottish Rite Freemasonry.
