This is the first book-length study in English of this little-known area of Early Modern architecture. Southern Italy, and the eighteenth century in Italy, receive much less coverage than the centre-north and the Renaissance period. Th will address this gap, broadening the scope of studies of Italian and Early Modern culture. 2. My approach and variety of sources will appeal to a range of scholars - Scholars of Early Modern architecture, Early Modern history and politics, Italian culture, Southern Italy, the Spanish Empire, architectural theory, architectural decoration, urbanism, cultural hybridity, dance, territoriality, court and aristocracy. 3. My book questions accepted ideas on urbanism and the Baroque, and engages with new currents in ornament, hybridity and the material turn. Instead of seeing architecture as simply a reflector of meaning it argues that architecture conveys meaning and creates new environments which aid power symbolically, politically and economically. The catastrophic Sicilian earthquake of 1693 led to the rebuilding of over 60 towns in the island’s south-west.
