Very good condition. The binding is tight. The pages are clean, no markings, creasing, tears. The boards are clean, no wear. The dust jacket is clean with minor wear / edge wear. A nice copy! Features black-and-white photographs taken primarily between 1929 and the mid-1930s. During this time, List traveled extensively through Greece, Italy, and Germany, capturing intimate portraits of his male friends and companions. Influenced strongly by classical Greek and Roman sculpture, Renaissance art, and the Surrealist movement, his work often contrasted homoerotic, semi-nude, or nude male subjects against sun-drenched Mediterranean landscapes and ancient architectural ruins. The collection carries a poignant historical weight. List captured what many describe as a fleeting window of innocent physical beauty and camaraderie just before the Nazi regime rose to power and co-opted the aesthetics of athletic youth for fascist propaganda. As a homosexual man of Jewish heritage, List faced immediate danger from the Nazi party. Instead of destroying his deeply personal photographs, he hid them in a box under his bed, preserving a world that was soon shattered by World War II. While the photographs were taken in the 1920s and 1930s, they were collected and published posthumously as a monograph in the late 1980s, featuring an introduction by the famous poet Sir Stephen Spender.
