HISTORY AND ORIGINS Following the 1969 Stonewall riots and subsequent legal victories regarding male physique photography, the gay adult press began expanding rapidly. Publisher George W. Mavety originally funded a high-end cultural and art publication called Dilettante in 1974. After that title folded due to low sales, Mavety and editor John Devere reconfigured the format to launch Mandate in the spring of 1975.
