(Circa 1930s) Description: Original watercolour, 50 x 32cm (image), 51.5 x 34.5cm (sheet), signed lower right, the extremities of the sheet chipped with some worming to the head and foot, preserved in a little scuffed window mount measuring 65 x 47 cm, in very good condition. Atmospheric original watercolour by Kobayashi Tokusaburo (1884–1949) who was a prominent Japanese yōga (Western-style painting) artist whose career blossomed between the Taisho era (1912-1926) and the 1940s. Trained at Tokyo Fine Arts School in Western techniques, he was influenced by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Edgar Degas, subsequently producing distinctive oil paintings of everyday life, intimate portraits of his children, and dramatic marine scenes as an active member of the Shunyo-kai. A retrospective of his work (the first of its kind) was held late in 2025 at the Tokyo University of the Arts. When referring to this item please quote stockid 224250.
