(Circa 1987) Description: Photograph album with blue plastic cover, 10 x 14.5cm, 14 leaves with 23 photos inserted, some colour, some black and white, of groups and individuals, 11 x 9cm or smaller. A little soiled at edges, in good condition. An interesting piece of history from the Third Indochina War and the Sino-Vietnamese conflicts (1979–1991). In 1987, Chinese soldiers were primarily engaged in the "Two Mountains" campaign along the Sino-Vietnamese border, a series of defensive and offensive operations following the 1979 war. Although the album opens with action photographs of Chinese troops crossing the Sino-Vietnamese border, the remaining images are all remarkably normal despite the martial subject matter. One photograph, datable to the 1980s on the evidence of the Type 85 PLA uniforms worn, shows a pair of comrades-in-arms posing for the camera, with one wearing a green hand-knitted jumper emblazoned with an "OK" motif in white. The irregular, slightly uneven lettering suggests the design was imitated from memory rather than copied from a printed source, hinting at the informal, secondhand routes by which fragments of international style reached even the remote borderlands of China.
