Taisho 5 [ 1916] Description: Colour folding sugoroku game sheet, 54.5 x 79cm, a few tiny holes at a few folds, a little light foxing and browning on margins and reverse. Very good copy. This vividly coloured and lively sugoroku was issued as a supplement to the January 1916 issue of the children’s magazine Yōnen no Tomo. The game is set within an exposition ground, where families move between a variety of shows, entertainments and attractions. Such events had become enormously popular in Japan following the Tokyo Taishō Exposition, held at Ueno Park in 1914 and reportedly attended by some 7.5 million visitors. Most of the attractions depicted are intended to amuse and excite, including fairground rides, acrobatic performances and sumo tournaments. Others introduce an international or exotic element, among them a ribbon dance around a pole and a “South Seas” display showing an indigenous figure armed with a bow and arrows attempting to catch aquatic creatures. Such imagery reflects the expanding awareness of the wider world among Japanese audiences, including children, while also revealing the stereotyped ways in which peoples and cultures were represented at the time.
