Macmillan. 1864 Description: xii (lacking initial blank) + 452 pp; bound in modern quarter calf over marbled boards by James Ashton, 18.4 x 12.5cm. Spine gilt lettered and ruled in compartments with raised bands, endpapers renewed, text with occasional spotting and browning, title page stained with an old flourish of ink at the foot, a good copy. Set in the decade following the 1857 Mutiny, this work draws on Trevelyan's first-hand experience of India, where his father served as Governor of Madras. Written as twelve fictional letters home from Henry Broughton, a young Cambridge graduate serving in the Indian Civil Service, it offers a lively and often witty portrait of British life in Calcutta and remote provincial stations. Trevelyan comments perceptively on colonial administration, the indigo and opium industries, and the isolation experienced by young British officials.
