Meiji 43 [ 1910] Description: Colour folding sugoroku with colour counters on left margin, 55 x 78cm, some very occasional light browning and spotting visible largely on the reverse only. Very good. This "Round the World" sugoroku game, published by the Tokyo Asahi newspaper at the start of 1910, celebrates the Japan-British Exhibition, which was to open at White City in London in May of that year. Each counter which is printed on the left margin features an image of the British and Japanese flags side by side, and the journey takes players to London via Hawaii and North America, where they are met with trumpet-playing cherubs on a cloud waving more national flags. Along the way, players travel from Shinbashi in central Tokyo to Yokohama, by ship across the Pacific with a stop in Hawaii (illustrated by a picture of farmers cutting sugar cane). They visit San Francisco, New York, Washington D.C., and reach London - depicted as a view of the houses of parliament from the Thames. In Europe, they visit Paris, Switzerland, Rome, Berlin (represented by a picture of the Brandenburg Gate), and Netherlands. They reach Moscow and travel across Russia on the Siberian Railway.
