[Hakubunkan]. Taisho 10 [ 1921] Description: Colour folding sugoroku game sheet, 54 x 79cm, a little browning on margins and on reverse, some tiny chips at margins but overall very good. This colourful baseball-themed sugoroku was issued as a supplement to the January 1921 issue of the boys’ magazine Shōnen Sekai (少年世界). Baseball had grown steadily in popularity in Japan since the beginning of the twentieth century, and by the 1920s university rivalries, particularly that between Waseda and Keio universities, and high school tournaments were attracting enthusiastic spectators of all ages. A New Year sugoroku centred on baseball would therefore have held particular appeal for young boys.
