Transcript of a speech originally given to the Royal Geographic Society in London in 1902 (here disbound from an annual report of the Smithsonian Institution). Oscar Neumann (1867-1946) accompanied Baron Carlo von Erlanger (1872-1904) to Somalia and Ethiopia on a scientific ornithological expedition, collecting specimens destined for the Rothschild collection in Tring (now a division of the Natural History Musuem) and documenting many species for the first time.
