Gilgamesh. First Mitchell edition, signed by the author on the title page. Mitchell's rendition of the Sumerian epic was a runner up for the first annual Quill award for poetry. He has also been celebrated for translations of Homer, the Bhagavad Gita, and Tao Te Ching. The Americanization of the ancient Mesopotamian poem, published contemporaneously with the Iraq war, cast the epic into an uncomfortably ironic light.
