First edition of Shute's best-known book, a post-apocalyptic novel that demonstrates a "sensitive appreciation of the frightful possibilities of global nuclear warfare and annihilation by radioactive dust" (ODNB). The novel was "hailed as the most important Australian book ever written" (Flynn). It was adapted for screen twice, once in 1959 with Gregory Peck, Ava Gardener, and Fred Astaire, and again in 2000, with Armand Assante, Rachel Ward, and Bryan Brown.Provenance: the collection of Steve Forbes, chairman of Forbes Magazine, and presidential candidate in the 1996 and 2000 US elections.
