Civilization and its Discontents. First edition in English of Freud's seminal work exploring the incompatibility of society and the individual, originally published in Vienna the same year as Das Unbehagen in der Kultur. The translator was Joan Riviere (1883-1962), who had been a founding member of the British Psychoanalytical Society in 1919 and who directly collaborated with Freud on her translations. Freud's biographer Peter Gay judged that her work "retained more of Freud's stylistic energy than any others" (p. 465).
