The Tailor of Panama. First edition, pre-publication presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, "For Kit, with love as ever - David aka John le Carré, 10 Sep '96". Publication was in October. Kathleen Wedgwood "Kit" Coryton frequently hosted the author at Pentillie Castle, Cornwall, which he described as "a splendid Cornish castle near Saltash" in The Secret Pilgrim (1991, p. 258).Le Carré inscribed many books for his friend and valued critic Coryton (1916/17-2009), and he routinely presented her with proof copies to gain her thoughts during the drafting stages.The Tailor of Panama received excellent reviews on publication and was described as "a tour de force in which almost every convention of the classic spy novel is violated" (Rush). It was adapted into a film in 2001, starring Pierce Brosnan and Geoffrey Rush.
