A Sail to Smyrna: First edition, presentation copy inscribed on the title page, "Presented to Mrs Hadley by Mrs Baillie, Wivenhoe Rectory, Colchester, 1890". E. C. C. Baillie spent two months in Turkey with her daughter and friends, travelling through Istanbul, İzmir, and Ephesus. Her two-week stay in Istanbul is illustrated with plates after her own accomplished drawings.Baillie (active 1853-1873) was "a well-educated British Christian writer, thinker, poet, and world traveller" (Taylor, p. 58) who authored eight books, many on religious themes. She was married to Reverend John Baillie, rector of Wivenhoe in Colchester, where the pair lived. A Sail to Smyrna was her final published work and it is unclear how much longer she lived. The inscription may therefore be in her daughter's hand.
