This is the first of several major works in which Lehmann reports his discovery of liquid crystals, which now form the basis of many electronic display systems. The detailed study describes the crystal phenomena observed and the equipment used, accompanied by drawings and microscope photographs from the research. Lehmann (1855-1922) completed his doctorate at the University of Strasbourg by 1877 and went on to teach across Germany before being appointed professor of physics at the University of Karlsruhe in 1889.
