DATE23–25 FEB 2009 | LIVE AUCTION 1209 The landmark February 2009 Christie's auction of the art collection of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé in Paris featured over 700 lots (with around 690 to 700+ cataloged works offered across multiple sessions). A later companion auction in November 2009 offered an additional 1,185 lots from their residential properties After Saint Laurent died in 2008, his longtime partner Pierre Bergé put the collection they had built over roughly 40 years up for auction. Christie’s and Pierre Bergé & Associés held the sale at the Grand Palais in Paris, February 23–25, 2009. It brought in €373.9 million (about $484 million at the time), then a record for a private collection sold at auction. The collection ranged from major paintings to sculpture, furniture and decorative objects. The standout was Matisse’s Les coucous, tapis bleu et rose, which sold for about €35.9 million. An Eileen Gray chair brought about $21.9 million. The appeal was both the quality of the objects and their provenance: buyers were acquiring pieces Saint Laurent and Bergé had actually lived with.
