The Critique of Dialectical Reason is Sartre’s attempt to synthesise his existentialist view of human freedom with a Marxist theory of history, a project initiated by the publication of Search for a Method in 1957, which appears as the introduction to the first volume of the Critique . Sartre’s aim here is a complete revitalisation of the promise of Marxism through reconceptualisation of the Marxist notion of praxis in terms of the existential concept of project . Sartre proposes a concept of praxis as a projective action of human consciousness which creates history and makes it intelligible, which is simultaneously conditioned by the external environment. The second volume, subtitled The Intelligibility of History , appeared posthumously in 1985 under the editorship of Sartre’s adoptive daughter Arlette Elkaïm-Sartre (1935-2016).
