This is the original UK hardcover in its jacket — black cloth, gilt still bright, the square album-sized object Paper Tiger was built to print, the format that lets Pennington’s paintings occupy the page the way a vinyl sleeve occupies a turntable. Some 1976/77 hardcovers were printed in the Netherlands; this copy is the Italian printing, dated 1976 only. The history that lies silently in wait for us like a lion in the grass. That is the book’s own dare, and it is the right one. Eschatus is not another parlor game of retrofitting Nostradamus onto last Tuesday’s headlines. Pennington — the British painter who put faces on Heinlein, Asimov, Clark Ashton Smith, Gene Wolfe’s Book of the New Sun, and the New English Library Dune cycle — spent autumn 1975 through winter 1976 making a future instead of a scrapbook of the past.
