John Wynne’s abridgement was authorised by Locke himself and designed to lighten the ‘burden’ on readers who struggled with the original of Locke’s Essay Concerning Human Understanding. It was first published in 1696 and enjoyed enormous popularity during the eighteenth century. Provenance: bookplate of Lord Sandys (1726-1797), from his library at Ombersley Court in Worcestershire.
