presentation copy Defence of Lord Ellenborough by James Anthony Froude (1818-1894). Ellenborough had been the President of the Board of Control from 1828-1830 and was an early and vocal advocate for the transference of India into government hands. Despite his arguments not succeeding he would go on to be the President of the Board of Control three further times and Governor-General of India between 1842 and 1844. Froude was an English writer, although this pamphlet was written during his attempt at an ecclesiastical career. He would go on to write one of the most important British histories of the nineteenth century. First edition; 8vo (20 x 12.5 cm); presentation inscription to title, later blue-green calf, spine in five compartments rubbed; [2], 83 pp.
