Major-General Sir John Malcolm (1769-1833) was Governor of Bombay 1827-1830 and is widely remembered in Indian literature for his meeting with Sahajanand Swami and his support for the ending of sati. This speech, calling for the government to accept the terms put forward in the Act of 1833, was his last. He suffered a stroke immediately after and died in May 1833. Scarce, only 5 UK institutional copies (Cambridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow, St Andrews, Southampton) and not in BL. First edition; 8vo (21 x 13.5 cm); contemporary ownership inscription to title with faint stamp mark, modern quarter red morocco, gilt rolled red cloth boards, spine lettered in gilt, all edges speckled red, a fine copy; 38 pp.
