William Henry Sleeman (1788-1856), an officer in the East India Company, achieved some renown for his part in the anti-Thugee campaign in the 1830's and 40's, before becoming a political resident in Gwalior, and later, Lucknow. The present work is arranged in the form of a tour and includes observations on Hindu social and religious rituals, crops, legends, witchcraft, etc. A very attractive work with good illustrations of Indian architecture. First edition; 2 vols, 8vo (25 x 17 cm); 32 chromolithographed plates including frontispieces, armorial bookplates to front pastedowns; publisher's original gilt green cloth, covers and spines with gilt pictorial designs and gilt borders, spines faded with a couple small nicks expertly restored, a few marks to boards, still a bright very good copy; xii, 478, 2 (ads); viii, 459 pp. Abbey Travel 466; Riddick 167.
