Newsweek Pacific Edition April 19, 1982. I purchased the magazine from a newsagent at the time as I had a professional interest in how the UK armed forces would go against the Argentine armed forces. There are several reports totaling nine pages with respect to the Falklands crises. We now know who came second! Seeing HMS Hermes carrying 11 of its 12 Sea Harrier aircraft and 8 of its18 Sea King helicopters on its flight deck reminds me she served as the flagship of the British naval task force to the Falklands. HMS Hermes was a Centaur-class light aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy, originally laid down during World War II as HMS Elephant and completed in 1959. She was the larger of the two carriers deployed, alongside HMS Invincible, and was crucial in coordinating air operations and providing air cover for the fleet. Australian readers will recall the UK Government offered the other carrier HMS Invincible to the RAN. The Australian Government at the time declined the offer. HMS Hermes was decommissioned and sold to the Indian navy and was retired in 2017. Despite many service related moves around Australia and elsewhere this 44 year old magazine has survived very well. It has not been exposed to any weather effects over this time. The front and back covers are in excellent condition with barely any marks due to age or wear.
