SONNTAG, August. Professor Sonntag's Thrilling Narrative of the Grinnell Exploring Expedition to the Arctic Ocean, in the Years 1853, 1854, and 1855, in Search of Sir John Franklin, under the Command of Dr. E.K. Kane, U.S.N. Philadelphia: J.H.C. Whiting. [1857]. 8vo. Original cloth, ornamented in blind, spine lettered in gilt; pp. 176; full-page wood-engravigs; neat restoration to extremities., some spotting or foxing throughout due to poor quality paper, 1857 ownership inscription J. K. Kenderdine to initial blank, a good copy. First edition, rare. Sonntag was the astronomer with Kane's Franklin search expedition. The present narrative was published against the wishes of certain expedition members and the introductory pages offer the publisher's justification for its appearance. The book was printed on cheap paper and was doubtlessly rushed to press so as to capitalise on the popular appeal of the subject. Arctic Bibliography 14449; Sabin 86971. SKU: 2117596
