The Rubàiyàt of Omar Khayyàm.
£275 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books
This poem presents an interesting challenge to any reader trying to sort through its profound symbolism and not-so-obvious theme, and gained recognition over the course of the nineteenth century as a growing 'cult of the Rubáiyát' found expression in 'the Omar Khayyám Clubs of England and America' (Yohannan, p. 202). Large 4to (280 x 230 mm); 20 colour plates, each with a titled paper-guard, some minor, peripheral age-toning and browning, more so to preliminary leaves, one or two minor spots, otherwise very good; publisher's decorative cedar cloth, a little dulled with age, corresponding dust-jacket, spine very browned, contemporary ownership name (same as bookplate) to upper panel, general darkening and light soiling, extremities chipped and creased but sound and unrestored.
