Turkish Armenia and Eastern Asia Minor.
£2,500 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books
An excellent copy of this scarce work on Armenia and Kurdistan. A versatile and hardy traveller, Tozer (1829-1916) made regular journeys in Greece and Turkey. This was his most far reaching book, travelling to the edges of Turkey into Armenia to gaze upon Mount Ararat, which he calls 'the roof of Western Asia', and around Lake Van into Northern Kurdistan. He writes touchingly of the land and peoples he encounters, and with a deep appreciation for the history and culture of the region. First edition; 8vo (23 x 15 cm); 5 plates including frontispiece, folding coloured map, publishers presentation stamp to first few leaves, bookplate and shelf label to front pastedown; publisher's blindstamped cloth, spine lettered in gilt, inner hinges expertly restored, else a fine copy; xiv, 470, 24 (ads.). Not in Blackmer or Atabey.
