A finely bound copy of the first comprehensive exploration of the Sinai, Et Tih, Idumaea, and Moab entirely on foot. Edward Henry Palmer (1840-1882) joined the survey of Sinai Peninsula undertaken by the Palestine Exploration Fund in 1869 and joined Charles Francis Tyrwhitt-Drake in the exploration of the El Tih the following year, travelling amongst the Bedouin who called him Abdallah Effendi. He also produced numerous grammars of Arabic and Persian. The copy of one of the sons of the Liberal MP Richard Fothergill (1822-1903). He was elected to the House of Commons in 1868 for the constituency of Merthyr Tydfil, following the expansion of the suffrage with the passing of the Second Reform Act the previous year. First edition; 2 vols in 1, 8vo (22 x 15 cm); 5 folding maps, 2 of which coloured, 16 lithographed plates including coloured frontispiece, 20 in-text wood engravings, prize inscription to front free endpaper, touch of toning to title; near-contemporary full tree-calf, spine in six gilt compartments with gilt lettering piece, gilt frame to boards, gilt rolled turn-ins, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, a little rubbing to lower board edges, else a fine copy; xx, 576pp.
