MCCLINTOCK, Sir Francis Leopold. Cheque drawn in favour of Admiral Sir F. Leopold McClintock, Arctic navigator, endorsed with his signature on the reverse. July 1st 1878. A Messrs Ranson Bouverie Co cheque for 2 pounds and 10 shillings made out to Sir F.L. McClintock. 'McClintock had first sailed to the Arctic in 1848 on the Enterprise under Sir James Clark Ross, and two years later on a similar expedition in the Assistance . In 1852 he had command of the Intrepid on the expedition commanded by Sir Edward Belcher. He established himself as a skilled sledger, undertaking several long sledging journeys and making improvements in the technique. He is best remembered for his command of the Fox on the voyage to ascertain the fate of Sir John Franklin and his crew. On his return he published his account in The Voyage of the Fox in the Arctic seas: a narrative of the fate of Sir John Franklin and his companions (1859)". SKU: 2076244
