The original deep red cloth boards are well-preserved, retaining strong colour with only slight sun-fading towards the spine. The printed paper spine label is lightly toned and shows faint rubbing but remains entirely intact and legible. The binding is remarkably tight and square for its age, showing minimal shelf-wear to the extremities. Internally, the rough-trimmed page block displays natural age-toning to the fore and bottom edges, while the pages themselves remain bright, clean, and free of foxing, making for a highly presentable and robust copy. Catalogue Note: This is the first trade edition of William Morris's final fantasy romance, published posthumously. It follows the highly prized and limited Kelmscott Press edition printed the previous year, offering Morris's text to a wider commercial audience in a traditional late-Victorian cloth binding with a paper spine label. The front pastedown bears the illustrated ex-libris bookplate of Olga Casdagli. Copies of this first trade edition in the original cloth, especially those retaining a fully legible paper spine label, are becoming increasingly uncommon on the open market in such well-preserved condition.
