The original ribbed plum-brown cloth bindings are complete but display wear commensurate with their age, notably sunning to the spines and rubbing along the joints. The spine ends are chipped with minor fraying, and there is initial splitting starting at the hinges. The boards show light bumping to the corners and minor surface scuffing, yet the blind-stamped borders remain reasonably well-defined. Internally, the front pastedown and free endpaper of Volume I bear noticeable skinning and paper residue, likely from the removal of an old bookplate or label. The text blocks are generally sound and the pages remain legible, though the bindings are slightly shaken. A fair, unsophisticated set in its original state. Catalogue Note: First Edition. The present copy conforms to the required points for the true first edition [Sadleir 1339], notably retaining the half-title in Volume I [none called for in Volume II] and the requisite six pages of publisher's advertisements at the rear of the second volume. The set bears the discrete bookseller's ticket of "George T. Juckes / Book Merchant / 85 Aston Street / BIRMINGHAM" to the lower left corner of the front pastedown in Volume I.
