The book maintains its structural integrity and presents handsomely, with the patterned paper wraps remaining clean and bright. There are signs of careful use, including slight rubbing and bumping to the corners and spine extremities, alongside a very subtle bowing to the boards. Internally, the binding is secure. There is light, scattered foxing present on the preliminary pages, as is customary for this paper stock, but the main body of text is crisp, clean, and tidy. The loosely inserted handwritten letter shows a single neat horizontal fold and remains fully legible with no tears. Catalogue Note: This is a first edition of Theodora Roscoe’s collection of verse, printed at the esteemed Shakespeare Head Press. The present copy holds significant association value, bearing a dated authorial inscription on the title page: "To the Editor / 'Northern Lights' / with all good wishes / from / Theodora Roscoe. / April 1939.". Furthermore, the book is accompanied by a loosely inserted Autograph Letter Signed [A.L.S.] on blue Horn Hill Court stationery. Dated April 3, 1939, Roscoe writes to the editor of the newly launched 'Northern Lights', congratulating them on the publication's "birth". She gifts this copy of From the Country in the hope that some of the verse might suit the journal, while also submitting a new, unpublished poem
