Gillian Wearing: Signs That Say What You Want Them to Say and Not Signs That Say What Someone Else Rare Photobook / Artist Book Limited Edition - 1500 copies 96 pages, 45 color plates Maureen Paley 1997 Wearing's seminal project made between 1992 and 1993. To create it, Wearing confronted a number of strangers and individuals and asked them to write their opinions and thoughts on blank cards/signs before photographing the participants holding the signs. Statements ranged from deeply confessional and serious ('I'm Desperate") to political or whimsical ("Queer and Happy"). Wearing interviewed and photographed over 500 participants that she had encountered in the streets of London. Though this project was not her first photographic venture, it was the first time that she featured complete strangers as her subject matter. Book designed by Herman Lelie and Maureen Paley.
