Contemporary half mottled calf over cloth, spine gilt in compartments and lettered in one, all edges speckled; pp. [8 (title, verso blank, dedication, verso blank, separate forewords to the Swedish and Danish editions, note on Icelandic orthography and list of illustrations, verso blank)], 348; mounted colour-printed lithographic frontispiece, 3 mounted colour-printed lithographic plates, and one folding colour-printed lithographic map, all printed by Em. Baerentzen Co, 6 wood-engraved plates, wood-engraved illustrations and initials; extremities rubbed and scuffed with minor losses, occasional light spotting, short, skilfully-repaired tears on folding map, otherwise a very good copy. First Danish edition, with a new foreword by the author. The Swedish geologist Paijkull (1836-1869) visited Iceland in 1865, and his account of the island was first published in Swedish as En Sommar på Island (Stockholm: 1866), and was followed by this Danish edition and an English edition, translated by M.R.
