The Brothers Karamazov. First edition in English, first issue binding. Constance Garnett's translations introduced Russian literature to the British reading public, and her work was highly acclaimed by her contemporaries, including Leo Tolstoy, who encouraged her to continue her work. The Brothers Karamazov, Dostoevsky's last novel, was serialized in the Russian Messenger between January 1879 and November 1880. Garnett's translation was published in the US by the Macmillan Company in the same year as this edition. This copy has the full name of the author in the series title on the spine ("The Novels of Fiodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky") at the head of the spine, thought to be a point of first issue.Provenance: Oliver Strachey (1874-1960), the brother of Lytton and a cryptographer at Bletchley Park (calling card tipped to front free endpaper) - Ralph Wedgwood (1874-1956), railway administrator and Joseph Conrad's executor (bookplate).
