Henry Miller wrote his memoir Big Sur and the Oranges of Heironymous Bosch (1957) about his life in Big Sur, Brautigan's first published novel was A Confederate General from Big Sur, and Kerouac's Big Sur (1965) records his nightmarish stay in Lawrence Ferlinghetti's cabin under the Bixby Canyon bridge. Emil White was a long-time friend and personal secretary to Miller, and later founded the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur.
