1906 Philip R Goodwin The Noose Saturday Evening Post Complete Western Magazine

$225 · Offered by eBay

An exceptional original June 9, 1906 issue of The Saturday Evening Post featuring The Noose, one of only three Saturday Evening Post covers created by celebrated American illustrator Philip R. Goodwin (1881–1935). Best known for his dramatic portrayals of the American West, wildlife, hunting and outdoor life, Goodwin became one of the important illustrators of the Golden Age of American illustration. His work included illustrations for Jack London's The Call of the Wild, and he studied under influential illustrator Howard Pyle. This striking cover depicts a young woman on horseback and accompanies The Noose, a Western story by noted American author Hamlin Garland. What makes this issue particularly appealing for a Goodwin collector is that his work continues inside the magazine. The complete story includes multiple Philip R. Goodwin illustrations, including the opening view of The Kettle Hole Ranch, the dramatic carriage scene captioned Pull up, Dell. It's No Use, and the horseback illustration She Sowed Her "Bids" Broadcast. Several illustrations bear Goodwin's printed signature and the date 1906. Goodwin created only three covers for The Saturday Evening Post, making this complete original issue a particularly interesting piece of his early commercial illustration work. The magazine also retains its original subscriber mailing label, addressed to Appleton, Wisconsin—a wonderful reminder that magazines of this era were mailed directly to subscribers with the cover exposed ra
