To Kill a Mockingbird was an immediate hit when it was released in 1960 (as evidenced by this thirty-sixth printing, less than a year after the first), winning the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961. Lee was awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom for the book in 2007, and a New York Times poll from 2021 ranked it the "most important book of the last 125 years." While controversy surrounding the novel's simplified depiction of race relations in the South, underdeveloped Black characters, and impact on the Civil Rights movement have provided steady fuel for popular and academic articles on every side for well over half of a century, To Kill a Mockingbird remains an American classic. This is the first printing to use an updated dust jacket referencing the Pulitzer Prize.This copy was inscribed by Lee to Holmes Lamoreux, former CEO of the Sabreliner aviation company. After retiring from Sabreliner in 2014, he became a committee member and eventually chairman of the St. Louis zoo.
