DIMENSIONS OF SAILS OF U.S. 74 GUN SHIP "FRANKLIN" [manuscript title]. A precise account of measurements for sails used by the U.S.S. Franklin. The Franklin was a seventy-four gun frigate built in 1815, and was appropriately the first to be built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. She sailed as the flagship of the Mediterranean Squadron and later the Pacific Squadron until 1824, then was converted into a receiving ship in 1838. This undated manuscript provides exhaustively detailed measurements of her many sails, and the second page provides comparisons between the Franklin's measurements and those of other ships. After each sail is measured, the total surface of sail is calculated to 8182.26 feet.
