REPORTS ON THE FISHES, REPTILES AND BIRDS OF MASSACHUSETTS. [with:] REPORT ON THE HERBACEOUS PLANTS AND ON THE QUADRUPEDS OF MASSACHUSETTS. These reports were ordered by the Massachusetts State Legislature as part of a "general trigonometrical survey of the commonwealth." They were written by D. Humphreys Storer "Fishes and Reptiles," William Peabody "Ornithology," Chester Dewey "Plants," and Ebenezer Emmons "Quadrupeds." The plates are of fish and a turtle. Each of the present volumes bears a contemporary gift inscription on the front wrapper from Edward Hitchcock to Abraham Jenkins, Jr. Edward Hitchcock (1793-1864) was professor of geology and later president of Amherst College. He served as the state geologist of Massachusetts. It was at Hitchcock's recommendation that the Massachusetts legislature authorized the present reports, together with his own geological report, in 1837. Abraham Jenkins, Jr., (1811-1861) had graduated from Amherst in 1838 and at about the time of publication of the present volumes was assisting Professor Hitchcock with his chemical lectures and the geological survey of the state. He later went on to study theology before becoming a minister in New Hampshire.
