Navy blue cloth boards with gilt title lettering to spine; blue and yellow illustrated dust wrapper; pp. 9-61; slight fading to upper edge and minimal staining to bottom of spine on dust wrapper; otherwise near fine. First edition, inscribed to Nick Grant from Ted Hughes; "For Nick/affectionately/from Ted/ April 1987" wih a cryptic message concerning Saints Island and with additional signature to title page. "This is a day for small marvels. The Mayflies are leaving their mother" begins the poem Saints Island which is explicitly alluded to in Hughes's inscription to Grant. The poem is dedicated to the Irish painter Barrie Cooke and the beautiful illustrations from frequent collaborator Leonard Baskin enhance Hughes's human investigation into the life of plants and insects.
