This guide was originally published by John Murray who started to published his own guides in the 1830s. This copy has two title-pages dated 1832 and 1833 and covers France and Italy in detail. Starke was a well known traveller and author and her guides were popular with the nineteenth century traveller before the age of railways. She was one of the first to recognise that practical information should be included in guide books and many consider her to be the pioneer of the modern day travel guide. Her last travel guide was published in 1839. Eighth edition. Two title-pages, pp.639, one plan of the "Forum Romanum", light spotting to preliminaries, previous owner's signature on title-page, bookplate; restored preserving most of the publisher's brown cloth gilt lettered, faded in parts; very good copy.
