An early American surveying manual and Litchfield, Connecticut, imprint, considered by some to be the earliest wholly American work on the subject. The author, a resident of Salisbury, had thirty years practical experience in surveying, and after detecting errors in common surveying methods opted to set forth improved techniques in the present book. The preface is dated Salisbury, Connecticut, November 1794, wherein he states his indebtedness to Wilson and Gen. Philip Schuyler for surveying and mathematical methods. The recommendation leaf includes testimonials by David Brooks (of Red-Hook), Augustus Porter (of Salisbury), Ebenezer Burr (of Norfolk), and Epaphras Sheldon (Litchfield County Surveyor).
